Stuff my third graders say v. 5

me: what does stop talking mean?
kid: no talking!
me: then why are we all talking?
kid 2: you asked us a question?

me: what you're not taking me to Hawaii?
kid: what, I don't pay!

kid: wait, America bought Alaska?
me: yes 
kid: I bet Bush bought it!

kid: me and E are NEVER playing 52 card pick up, again!
kid 1: that's like the 50th time!
kid 2: you're the 50th time!
kid 1: that makes so sense!!

me: please erase that neatly
kid: i'm not a man of erasing

kid: I don't like Abraham Lincoln
me: why?
kid: I never saw him...not sure what kind of guy he is

kid 1: you have a bubble on your nose
kid 2: it's a wart
kid 1: bubble sounds better 
kid: Ms. Benjamin? What's that pink thing milk come from?
me: uhhh
kid: like where it comes out of the cow?
me: an udder?
kid: thank you!

me: what do you think the lesson is in this fable?
kid: be nice to someone you can get good caramel
me: you mean karma?

kid: what's that other soda?
me: sprite? 
kid: no the one you take to make you throw up when you're sick
me: ginger ale? 
kid: yes!

kid: what's the purpose of cursive? we already know English... 
kid: can I write "arise corporal?"
me: sentences need 4 or more words.
kid: how about "arise corporal it's time to start the battle!"
me: that works

kid: what's Cen-a-da?
me: Canada?
kid: oh that makes more sense

kid: you use detective skills when you're a fornesic detective 

kid: (with two quarters near his ears) look! I'm listening to 50 cent! 
me: what does stingy mean?
kid: oh! it's like asphyxiate, it has two meanings
me: what? no!

kid: why don't we just spell words the way we say them or say them the way they're spelled? 
me: because English is weird

kid: bad news R, my mom says we can't get hamsters for our science fair project

me: use the word buy in a sentence 
kid: I want to buy wine but I'm not 21 
kid: Did you know that Mitt Romney was going to shut down Sesame Street?
kid 2: what's wrong with Elmo!?

kid 1: wrecking ball! see??
kid 2: oh! outside! I thought you meant in Ms. Benjamin's room!

kid 1: (typing and saying) Georgia is the best state
kid 2: no! Alaska is!
me: guys, your state reports aren't a contest in whose state is better!
kids: to us it is!!

rabbi salztman: Tuesday we have the geography bee
kid: but what about the snow day!?!?!
me: nothing is official yet
kid: it's going to snow, that's official!

  4. Delightful. I got to watch my 7-year old grandson and my daughter put together his presentation on Alexander Graham Bell yesterday, then he did a short speech with a little coaching. He has until Friday to get it down pat, but he was looking pretty good!

  15. I can only imagine what your days are like - I'm betting it is hard to keep a straight face many of the times. I like the way some of them think. (the whole spell the word or say the word configuration makes perfect sense to me).
