And say that I'll be there e'er long...
Saturday night, Mom and I had a night out on the town seeing the Spring Awakening revival. The show was revived this fall, but with a beautiful and artistic addition. The theater company Deaf West has restaged the show using Hearing and Deaf actors. The entire show is presented in American Sign Language. Deaf actors have a "voice" on stage with them and the Hearing actors also sign their parts.
I had never seen Spring Awakening so it was wonderful to finally see this remarkable show. The story is beautiful and a bit sad, but so well done. The cast was amazing, including Marlee Matlin (I may have freaked out when she walked on stage!!).
The ASL is a beautiful addition, it's like choreography - it enriches the story and visual experience. I have actually scene one other Deaf West production before, "Big River" so it was a real treat to see their next big production.
The show ends this winter, so if you can see it - GO!
And! Come link up and join the Good.Random.Fun. each Monday, right here!

That would have been really interesting to see. Love theatre.
ReplyDeletethat sounds really cool. my high school had a deaf and hard of hearing program so most of our school performances or assemblies included interpreters and it was always interesting to watch them signing!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of a show done in all sign language. How fantastic!

ReplyDeleteWow! What an experience! And I love Marlee Maitlin - I would have freaked a bit too! We're going to see Beautiful tonight! Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteSo envious you got to see this! It is on my Broadway Bucket List...along with "Hamilton"! Thanks for sharing at Song-ography.
ReplyDeleteI bet that was awesome to see. I love how asl creates its own choreography. My husband's grandmother, daughter of 2 deaf parents, was a noted interpreter in the Philadelphia area in here lifetime even having her own TV show back in the day.
ReplyDeleteVery cool!

My daughters were talking about this show when we were in NYC...it sounds so good! I would have loved it with the ASL and freaked out if I saw Marlee Matlin too!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great outing with your mom.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to see a Broadway play like that and to also see Marlee Matlin (I loved her in Children of a Lesser God).
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great production
