Due to a small camp field trip bus snafoo we found ourselves in Lexington at the Hartwell Tavern for lunch this week. I didn't mind a pit stop at a slice of history I've never seen!
Hartwell Tavern is an 18th century home and tavern. It is located on the actual "Battle Road" and was a witness house during the Revolutionary War.
It is believed that the house was built in 1732-1733 by Ephraim and Elizabeth Hartwell and used part of the house to run an inn and tavern. It's said that on the night of April 18th, an advance guard of British soldiers captured Paul Revere and William Dawes just down the road from the tavern.
Dr. Samuel Prescott who was riding with them, escaped by leaping his horse over a stone wall and fleeing through the pasture. He everntually came out by Hartwell Tavern where he woke the Hartwells and told him that the British were coming.
The message reached the Minute Men in the area and the Lincoln Minute Men able to arrive at the NorthBridge before the British soldiers got there.

ReplyDeleteGreat place to visit and to have lunch; I like to read about such places and I must say that the ceramic pots look so similar with our traditional ones, somehow. So interesting aspects captured! History is always amazing.
