Sarcasm?

As part of my "stuff," I don't hear sarcasm well. Being able to detect tones of voices and the nuances of language was (and can still be) very tricky for people with CAPD. As a child I was always missing the sarcastic comments others were making, which made it hard to follow along in some situations and also meant I would misinterpret things wrong, often.

Through lots of practice, trial and error, and asking "was that sarcasm" I finally started to get the hang of it. If you naturally can get and use sarcasm, appreciate it! I actually got good enough at one point, that I started to really use my new skill a lot, and one day my mom even remarked "now I regret teaching you sarcasm!"

For anyone who watches "The Big Bang Theory" you know the running "was that sarcasm" line that Sheldon uses.
That, in a less socially clueless way, was me for so long. So when I saw that they sell a "Big Bang Theory" shirt with the line "was that sarcasm" I had to get one. I had to work hard for this skill, so I decided to celebrate it!

  1. I sort of both love and hate sarcasm. I love it when it's witty and dry. The times I hate sarcasm is when the meanness comes through.

  2. Great shirt! Sarcasm runs strongly through our genes and of course the children have inherited it!! I hadn't read about your "stuff" before ..I would never have known.

  3. What a fascinating post, Tamar. Sometimes I get sarcastic in an email and without the voice and facial expression, the person thinks I'm serious. You're not alone in puzzling over it sometimes :) Great shirt!

  4. I'm guilty of sarcasm, but most usually in a fun-spirited way. It's always good to measure the doses though as you don't know how it will be received. I am laughing imagining your mom lamenting teaching you sarcasm. I can totally picture that. My Aidan is like me in many ways but he hasn't learned to tone it down and turn it off. I just shake my head.

  9. we stumbled across "Big Bang Theory" one evening and were surprisingly entertained. Sheldon's character speaks to my husband - he especially likes Sheldon's character/personality.

  10. This post has been swimming in my head since I first read it. For many reasons...Thanks for so openly sharing the struggle and how you overcame. So vulnerable, honest and inspiring. And most definately worthy of celebration!
