Contemporary art often gets a bad rap. You hear "is that art?" or "my five year old could make that!" I even once proclaimed, while staring at a circle of rocks on the floor of the Philadelphia art museum "I can do that in thebackyardd!" But, then there is the ICA in the Seaport district of Boston and it gives contemporary art a whole new, deep meaning.
Every exhibit here has a purpose. It makes you think.Serious themes are explored such as the role of black women during the second wave feminism movement or gender and representation as an artists' identity.
There are pieces that merge mundane subjects with classic pieces and your typical "modern" pieces like a green screen draped on the wall and floor.
But each time I go to the ICA I leave feeling like I really gained something from the art in a way a Monet can't touch me.

Looks like a great place to visit. It's very east to say "I could do that" but we always have to remember the thought process behind some of the pieces.
ReplyDelete...is that art" yep if it makes you think!
ReplyDeleteExactly what art is supposed to do - make you think! This is one museum in Boston I have never visited. Have to remember for the next time we visit.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely gets you thinking - which I suppose is the point.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but the last photo with the Obey and Equality art pieces really speak to me! The designs are just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love art galleries, but modern art often leaves me dumbfounded...like the green piece draped on the floor. Hmmm....
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the way you open the conversation here and push readers gently to reassess their thinking.
ReplyDeleteThe man and pet with the cone collar says to me 'how narrow minded people sometimes are.' Definitely a piece to make a person stop and think!
ReplyDeleteBut the first photo with the black bundles on the floor - no idea whatsoever about the meaning of that
Have a wonderful day!
I love modern art, even the weird or obvious ones! We saw a room filled with candy at one museum!

ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who it is that decides what is 'art' but I would like them to explain it to me! Until then, I will enjoy what I like and your tour seems to have something for everybody.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. This can often be confusing art, but sometimes it really does pack a punch.
