Cranbrook Gardens

Before I explored the Cranbrook Museum, I went to the Cranbrook House. It's an English-Tudor estate of the Cranbrook’s founders. It was built in 1908 by a Detroit architect and is the oldest surviving manor home in the Detroit area.
You can tour the house, but I just wandered around the 40 acres of beautiful gardens featuring amazing fountains and statues. I love European planned gardens and these were gorgeous. At every turn were fountains or the smell of flowers, and views of lower gardens from the variety of terraces. I can only imagine having the chance to have lived on those grounds!

  1. Beautiful. I probably would have taken the grounds instead of the interior of the house as well. At first I thought you might have been in England. Have you ever seen the show about the Cranbook ladies on PBS? It’s very good and it has Dame Judy Dench and Maggie Smith in it.

  9. what a place of beauty.... and great captures on it. Love the statues... i heard there was a planned statue of a nude in our town (Aurora CO) but a man had a fit that his daughter might see a breast so the sculptor was told to put a drape on it. Oy vey.
