Happy birthday, America.
A bittersweet and conflicting day for many again this year.
Too many have taken our liberties and freedoms for granted.
Our democracy is as fragile as it's ever been.
Many are questioning what we are actually celebrating this year.
But.
I have the right to vote and engage others in righting some scary wrongs.
I'm hopeful that many will come to their senses and realize we have to secure our union for the sake of many.
Freedom and democracy aren't something we can get comfortable with.
Volunteer.
Canvas or write postcards.
Do your part.
Our rights depend on it.
Happy birthday, America.
Here's to a land of the free, for all, in the near future.
...amen sister, don't let our freedoms slip away.

ReplyDeleteWell said! Happy 4th of July to you too Tamar.
ReplyDeleteLooking from afar, I would say a lot of your population are losing rights to even exist. I don't know how people talk about freedoms while eradicating the same freedoms from others but here we are. Same problems in many other countries too.
ReplyDeleteIn cheerier note, love the napery. And love your call to action. Too many times we just lament the bad behaviour if it doesn't directly affect us. "“None of us are free until all of us are free.” (for some reason I thought that was a MLK quote but I've discovered it's a 'modern paraphrase' of a quote by 19th century Jewish American activist & poet Emma Lazarus). Hope you had fun with family and friends.
A great day to celebrate
