Pool Party at Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center was transformed into a “Pool Party” last month featuring the art of Joel Mesler. The refreshing oasis was an immersive install and part of Rockefeller Center’s Summer at The Rink. There was a “pool” surrounded by turf grass, and filled with pool noodle sculptures and beach balls. The summery pop-up is inspired by Mesler’s memories of his childhood pool parties and he hopes to bring all visitors back to the simple whimsy of summertime bliss.
The giant beach balls and letters really set the stage for an environment of play, leisure and fun, transforming midtown into something else! Mesler also designed 193 flags featuring words like “hugs,” “love,” “hope,” and “joy,” in Mesler’s playful signature style. These flags add to the summery vibe and frame the iconic rink!

I happened to get there mega early before the throngs of tourists arrived. It had also monsooned that morning so the "pool" was actually filled with puddles and standing water which added to the whole motif!
