Exploring Sintra

Visiting Sintra felt like stepping into a fairytale. Sintra is famous for its lush hills, romantic palaces, and picture perfect views, and was probably one of my favorite days we had in Portugal. When we arrived we wandered through Sintra’s quaint and colorful town center, grabbed coffee and pastries from a local bakery, and found our way to the buses that take you up into the hills to the iconic palaces.

We first made our way to the Castelo dos Mouros, an ancient fortress with panoramic views over Sintra and the Atlantic Ocean. The rugged stone walls and towers provide a stark contrast to the whimsical palaces, adding a sense of history and adventure to the day. We could climb up along the walls and into the towers. It was insane to think that they built this in the 10th century; we kept remarking that anyone who scaled the dense, rocky hill to the castle should have been allowed to conquer it!
Next, we ventured down the hill and through the local streets to the Quinta da Regaleira, a gothic-style estate that’s said to be full of mystery. It's full of elaborate gardens, hidden grottos, and the iconic Initiation Well - it was so enchanting place to explore. Descending the spiral staircase of the well felt like entering another world! I can only imagine what they used to use it for!
We wrapped up our day at the Palácio da Pena, a colorful masterpiece perched atop a mountain. The vivid yellow and red facades and insane tilework of this 19th-century palace, combined with sweeping views of the surrounding forest, took our breath away. Wandering through its rooms and terraces that once housed Portougese royalty felt like exploring a dream!
Sintra’s mix of history, mystery, and beauty made it an unforgettable destination! We were exhausted after a wonderful day walking up and down the historic town but loved every second of our day there!
