Happy birthday, America.
A bittersweet and conflicting day for many this year.
Too many have taken our liberties and freedoms for granted.
Our democracy is as fragile as it's ever been.
Many are questioning what we are actually celebrating this year.
But.
I have the right to speak out about my concerns. I have the right to vote and engage others in righting some scary wrongs.
I'm hopeful that many will come to their senses and realize we have to secure our union for the sake of many.
Freedom and democracy aren't something we can get comfortable with.
Volunteer.
Canvas or write postcards.
Do your part.
...I don't feel festive at the moment.
ReplyDeleteMuch to mourn AND much to celebrate. Thanks for the realistic perspective you always bring to the table.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and powerful post, my friend! Well said and I am right there with you on all of it. I hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend despite the mixed emotions!

You're right, we are lucky we can speak out about how our country makes us feel. At least for now.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Our country's democracy appears to be more fragile than I realized was possible. July 4 brings mixed emotions for me again this year.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it seem like all our freedoms are in peril?
ReplyDeleteLOve the pretty shell and interesting fence post!
Well said!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a lovely day off regardless, but absolutely, enrol to vote. There was a saying here (ironically by one of the politicians) "You can choose not to be interested in politics, but you can't choose to be unaffected by it". Over here, that became very clear in the last 5 years - we really used our vote to think beyond our hip pocket this time and hopefully, tho we've yet to see, it makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteIt just wasn't the same this year.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! It was weird to kind of celebrate our Independence day when we are feeling like so much is being taken away in terms of our so called freedom.
