At the Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Chelsea recently, there was an immersive large-scale light installation titled "A Beautiful Despair" by artist Anila Quayyum Agha. This cube is part of Agha’s award-winning cube series and was the second of her cubes I have seen; one of her works was on display in Salem in 2018 and was equally as amazing.
The laser-cut patterns cut into the sculpture are the artist’s reinterpretation of floral and geometric motifs found in Islamic art and architecture in Asia and Africa. When lit from within, the deep blue cube casts luminous floor-to-ceiling shadows on the red gallery walls. Together, the red and blue were just so powerful and the shadows are so detailed and unique.
