Step Into Akua

There is a new piece of public art in Brooklyn! Akua is a massive soundscape pavilion by artist Torkwase Dyson built on the Pier 1 lawn in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Inside the installation, you can hear voices from Black archives, nature sounds, and electronic beats drifting across eight speakers. The views from inside and out are stunning, a backdrop of nature and the iconic bridges.

Her goal with this piece was to show that sound is more than just audio, but it can be a physical connection to the world around us. I was really drawn into the piece and can't help but think how effective Dyson's goal was! Akua is such an amazing space to reflect, imagine, and feel grounded in the world around us.

I often struggle with art, but I like that you can step into this one. It makes for a special experience, I think.
