Shaved Portions

There is another amazing art installation in the Garment District. “Shaved Portions” by Chakaia Booker, is a a 35-foot-tall abstract sculpture comprised of deconstructed rubber tires. It looks like a massive jungle gym of sorts and as you get closer you see more details and shapes.
The artist is know for her use of rubbish, specifically discarded rubber tires found on city streets, in auto-repair shops, and city dumps. She hopes her work makes people think about our impact on the world and what we leave behind. "Shaved Portions" is also meant to have us think about how we connect with one another. As I stood there marveling at the piece, I saw so many others stop and take it in, we would make eye contact while moving around the piece, so I guess Booker's vision is working!
