Haymarket

I finally made it down to Haymarket! It's only open on Fridays and Saturdays and most Fridays I have just been too busy with work for classes or there was mounds of snow on the ground.  I had heard they had amazing produce and even more amazing prices on this produce. Since the weather finally got warm I took the opportunity to pick up some veggies for a stir-fry I was planning on making for dinner. It was a warm day but the breeze off the harbor was really refreshing and the atmosphere was something else!
Some people were there to do their regular produce shopping, others were on lunch breaks from work, and then there were tourists checking out the historic market.
There were tons of fruits and veggies. And many of these fruits and veggies were just beginning to come into season.  Two stall owners were shouting that they had cherries. One would shout "cherries, sweet bing cherries," and not two seconds later the other guy would shout even louder, "sweeter bing cherries, much sweeter cherries!"
The prices were really amazing. I got an onion, a huge onion, for 25 cents, a gorgeous zucchini also for 25 cents, and in total I think I spent 15 dollars on a huge canvas bag full of veggies and some fruits. Yum!
I had so much fun down there. Something about buying your veggies and fruits right from the person who grew them that makes you appreciate them so much more. You are literally doing business with the person who grew your dinner. There is something to that for sure.
It's also pretty amazing to buy produce on the cobblestone streets of historic Boston.  This market has been in operation since the early 1830s, steps from Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, half a block from the freedom trail.
The sights at the market were amazing and my dinner turned out pretty darn good too!

I love buying fruits and veggies from the markets instead of at the supermarket. :)

One of my favorite sights and EVERYTHING is sweeter when it's sold in the sun!

Wow! What a huge market. Great pics! I love heading out to the farmer's market too, we have a big one here in Montreal, the Jean Talon market in Little Italy. Love all those fresh veggies!

My grandfather sold apples in this market...:) This post makes me happy to see Boston in it's glory with the sellers trying to out do each other. That is so much fun! and this post makes me sad. I'm missing my dad and stories of the city he sold papers in as an 8 year old boy.

Here something strange...In South Carolina there is nothing like this...you would think ~ The South? ~ Where farmers live, this kind of thing would be a dime a dozen. Only in Boston! There is nothing like it :)

I've been meaning to visit a farmer's market this summer. The fruits and veggies are always fresher and the prices often beat those of the grocery stores! Looks like a great way to spend the day :)

Have to admit during my short visit to Boston, we spent most of it doing touristy stuff - Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Aquarium, etc. Hear about Haymarket but decided to give it a pass. Thanks for "filling in the gap" for me ;-P

I have a love hate relationship with markets .... love exploring and finding a bargain but hate the crazy crowds, jostling and busyness of it all. Wish it was a more relaxing experience.
