Orchid

My class gave me a gorgeous orchid after our class' Milestone last Friday. I may have thought "oh boy, now I need to keep it alive..."
A google search of "orchid care" wasn't the most helpful. Apparently there are over 21,000 species of orchids.
So now I am trying to figure out which one this is because apparently there is a great deal of difference in how the various types are cared for.
At least the scenery is pretty whilst I figure out how to keep it thriving!

I received an orchid last year from friends and they told me to just give it 'warm bath' to water it and to keep it in a sunny window. It lived for a long time and even got some new growth. Yours is beautiful!

I have this variety and it is easy to care for. I use an ice cute to slowly water and add moisture. More to say. I'll find the species and care guide.

I picked one up last August - figuring, "well, it'll make for pretty pictures until it dies" - and surprisingly it lived a long and prosperous life and might even still be with us if I had just gone to the store and gotten proper soil to re-pot. Good luck.

Aren't they just wonderful? I managed to kill two off last year by being too heavy-handed.

I destroyed my entire collection of 15 orchids using too much fertilizer; your shots are lovely :)

This is gorgeous! Orchids are a bit finicky. I have never managed to keep a potted one alive. We had them growing outdoors in Thailand. They were wired to other trees in our yard. We noticed that they bloomed once per year. Usually following the rainy season. I think the balance of water is fairly important, and I'm horrible at that!

I can never keep plants alive so no advice there, but I love this little flower!

Oh my, to start they are gorgeous, and I have no idea how to care for one of those...I wish you luck! :)

That's a phalaenopsis and it's one of the easier-to-care for orchids. We used to have several of these. The blooms last a while and once the blooms all fall off, you need to clip off the entire stalk near the base. This helps to make sure the plant blooms again. :) Enjoy your lovely plant!

Oh, yes! That is a beauty! As for helping it thrive ... you'll have to go somewhere else. I just saw the comment just above. Sounds like she knows what she's talking about. Go for it!
