The Art of the Brick

Sunday a friend and I went to an awesome exhibition downtown at Quincy Market. I had seen it advertised on Livingsocial and we decided it would make for a good adventure on a perfect fall weekend in New England.
"The  Art of the Brick" is a traveling show displaying the works of Nathan Sawaya. He is a lawyer turned lego artist, he creates original and famous works entirely out of lego. Let's just say, it's impressive what he does with a little plastic brick.
Stained glass! Made from the little flat clear disc legos, so gorgeous. And the Easter Island head, it took him 50,000 + legos to make it!
It was amazing to see famous paintings and the famous "Dancer in 4th Position" in lego. I loved the scream brought to "life" in 3D.
It was really interesting to see the works up close and then step back and see how they changed visually. Some from far away looked exactly like the original work.
And then there were Sawaya's original works. These were really amazing because you really saw his own creativity and engineering come to life.
This may have been my favorite of his original works. Pretty wicked.
The T-Rex has over 80,000 legos in it!!
As the exhibition came to an end, you were given a lego and could sign your name on it. Sawaya then uses these legos for a new creation that he tends to put on public display in that city for a time as a thank you to his latest host city. The tree hugging man above was made of legos like this from a previous city and was actually on display hugging real trees for a bit. Cool to know my name may be in a sculpture soon!

Wow! This is some amazing work. I love all of the paintings recreated in Lego and the Easter Island sculpture too. How cool that your brick will be in a sculpture one day!

Wow, mind-blowing, isn't it?! We had a huge Lego exhibit at one of the malls a couple of years ago featuring famous landmarks around the world (e.g. Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, etc.) and everybody was oohing and ahhing over each creative piece.

What a cool exhibit to see... my girls would LOVE it. I'm thinking maybe it was actually here in Portland a couple years ago (or something similar)
