Rivalry

It's very well known, that the greatest sports rivalry in sports is between the Red Sox and Yankees. I finally had the chance to see the two teams duke it out.

It truly was an experience like no other. The boos could probably be heard across the river when two former Sox players came up to bat! Tons of taunts (playful and serious) at the brave souls who donned their Yankees gear (including my friend Jenny) and one fight with a (Yankee) fan being ejected.

Sadly, the Sox didn't fair well - A Rod hit a homer in the first inning, then many more runs followed. Mercifully Mookie Betts got the Sox on the board after sending a ball over the Monster, but even the rally caps weren't enough to do the Yankees in.

But, I was actually okay with that. My Zayda was a lifelong Yankees fan. How he put up with a Red Sox fan granddaughter is beyond me! My mom and I tried hard to take him to one last game at Yankee stadium and we regret it never happened.

So when the chance to see these two teams play - my team and his team - in the weekend before the 6th anniversary of his passing, I seized it. The year he died the Yankees won the world series and I said it was because Zayda was in the outfield. I like to think that night he was there, out in right field keeping my Sox at bay.

It was a special night, I finally saw the the rivals play against each other and it allowed me to have so many memories of Zayda all at once.

My grandfather was born and raised in Brooklyn and lived in Conn. as an adult. But, he was a die-hard Red Sox fan all the time. We sang Take me out to the ball game at his funeral. My dad was a sports writer for the Boston Herald...back when it was a decent paper, and he had a radio talk show in the late 70s called Clif and Claf. We used to watch baseball games in the press box with him sometimes when we were kids. I like to hear games on the radio as it brings me right back to memories of both my dad and my papa. i'm glad you enjoyed the game...still, it would have been better had the Red Sox won.

There's nothing like a ballgame in the stands. And you got to see one of the mythical rivalries! My son, Jimmy, has been a Don Mattingly fan for many years, so for a long time he was a Yankees fan. Now that he is with the Dodgers as manager he's a Dodgers fan. He tends to be and player fan as opposed to a team fan, unless you're talking football and then that's another story! Have a wonderful day!

This brings back memories of my own Grandpa and his love for the Cardinals...we used to go to games together. My other Grandpa was a Cubs fan, so it was fun to watch the two teams play each other (because that's the big rivalry where I'm from).

Wonderful loving post and photos about Rivalries and your Zayda ~

The Red Sox won the series when my aunt died and the parade camera panned her apartment building and window where she would look out from the kitchen ~ I felt she was right there only she had died in my home just the day before ~ What wonderful memories we have ~

Happy Weekend to you,

The sights, sounds and memories - not to mention the generations of tradition that come with sports. Looks like a great time.
