Little Things: Unfinished Cathedral

One of the amazing attractions in historic St. George is the unfinished Cathedral. Constructions began in 1874, to replace another church thought to be too damaged to fix.
There was a big disagreement among the parishioners about where funds should go: the new church or the repairing of the old one. Eventually they disagreed so much the architect took the remaining funds and ran off to the Cayman Islands!
Eventually, a hurricane really did damage to the in limbo building, securing it as a modern ruin. But is sure is a gorgeous one.
It's so amazing to see the ruins, although if it was never completed can it be in ruins...? The blue sky streaming through the roofless structure, the windows open, never to hold stained glass.
Do to structural integrity you can't walk through the church itself, but walking around it is a sight to be seen alone!

That is so striking and beautiful! That's a shame about it never being finished then getting damaged but the ruins sure are pretty!

I love old "ruins". These kind of remind me of the old Irish Monastery ruins. Sigh. So beautiful....especially the last photo.

I love visiting churches when I travel, especially old ones. There's this church in Macau (St. Paul's) where because of a fire, there now stands only the facade. It has since been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

That looks really cool, especially with the blue sky behind.
