I first heard about the Drama Book Shop on Instagram several months back and finally checked out the shop a few weeks back. It's nestled in the Garment District, not far from Times Sqaure. The shop was founded in 1917 by the Drama League and became an independent bookstore in 1923. The shop is home to all things theatrical with over 8,000 plays regularly in stock. It almost closed in 2019, but Lin-Manuel Miranda and his Hamilton partners bought it, preserving its spot in NYC for good!
The whole vibe is amazing - European reading room meets cafe. There are theater posters all around the walls and display cases with gems from various shows. At the center of the space is an epic centerpiece - a sculptural representation of a bookworm — 140 feet of scripts and songbooks, that twists and turns around the shop. This 3,500-pound art piece is a tribute to theatrical history!
