Living Lantern

Another winter, another awesome illuminated piece in Times Square! "Living Lantern" is all about letting one's inner light shine. The dynamic sculpture with wooden pieces that move with the wind is right on Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets. The goal of the piece is to remind each of us of our ability to find our way through periods of darkness. The kinetic outer membrane opens and closes in response to wind, filtering the light from its core, just as an individual’s inner strength shines through to meet life’s challenges with hope and perseverance.
The piece is quite big; standing at least 14 feet tall! The illuminated lantern evokes a calming effect through shifting colors and movements. Created by NEON and Frankie Boyle, the installation is meant to serve as a beacon of hope, brightness, and a guiding light in Midtown.
