The MET's roof garden was transformed into an Egyptian temple, with a twist. The installation by artist, Lauren Halsey is a mashup of the South Central Los Angeles Community where she is from and well-known Egyptian motifs. There are 4 giant sphinxes, large columns, and a temple-type space. What appears like hieroglyphics are a more modern, contemporary type of messaging.
Titled the eastside of south central los angeles hieroglyph prototype architecture (I), the work invited viewers to explore ancient Egyptian symbolism, 1960s utopian architecture, and contemporary visual expressions. It was a beautiful piece! From afar it looks like an extension of the famed Egyptian Temple on the main floor, but up close there is so much more to taken in, all with a view of the NYC skyline.
