We took a break from our normal math routine on Thursday and celebrated pi day!
First, we had to learn all about pi. How it isn't pie, but that it's a number that goes on forever and ever, and that it's used to figure out the measurement of a circle. We had fun seeing why we celebrate pi day on 3/14, too! I then had a few pi day activities for the kiddos to do, plus a special round treat.
First we did a circle scavenger hunt. They all had paper and clipboards and went around the class trying to find as many circular objects as possible. They really found some great ones and were very adorable as they tried to be "secretive" with what they had found. Then, we made round puzzles. Some kids made them look like pi, others wrote 3.14 or 3.1415926 (the digits of pi we learned) on their puzzles. I then had the fun task of cutting them out...
I also gave them a pi day survey. They had to list three things they thought of when they heard pi, their favorite circular object, an acrostic poem for the word "math," and 4 words that had the letters in pi in them.
Of course, no pi day celebration is fun without a circular treat! I tried to find a pie that was nut free, but alas no dice. So oreos it was. The kids decided it was a better treat because it was really 3 circles: the two cookies and the round stuffing!
It was a simple and fun celebration - they are already hoping they can celebrate pi day in 4th grade!
Never thought of relating an Oreo to Pi. What a great teacher you are! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day for your students!
ReplyDeleteI loved the little "pie" someone colored. How creative! :)
Wonderful! Congratulations to Pi, interesting celebration.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a great teacher! I love seeing all you come up with.
ReplyDeletesounds like a great lesson!
ReplyDeleteGosh I love that. So, so clever!
ReplyDeleteP.S. We have a great restaurant here called Pizza 3.14. :)
Oh pi day is so fun. I am glad they are learning this at their age. I didn't learn about pi until nearly high school. I swear kids are smarter these days and their teachers (you) have to be smarter than the teachers of my day (which was VERY LONG AGO). hahahhaha.
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun lesson! I don't remember it being so much fun way back when I learned about that in school!!
ReplyDeletemy youngest daughter is in 6th grade. she was really excited for pi day too. it's nice when the teachers make learning fun! sounds like you did an amazing job making the day loads of fun for the kiddos in your class!!
ReplyDeleteSO AWESOME! Being that I have a math lover here- we celebrated mathematically as well.
ReplyDeleteOh Tamar! You are young and can wear anything. It is when at my age it is a challenge. My ydd and I saw that jacket on Oprah's show for older gals to dress more age appropriate. So we hustled off to the store (about 4 yrs ago) and she bought it for me for Easter.
ReplyDeleteMy husband was at the grocery story on the 13, and said that the woman in front of him was buying pi cakes. Turns out she was a teacher, and had pre-ordered cookie cakes with the words "Happy Pi Day" on them. I told him, I couldn't believe he didn't buy was as well. But I guess knowing she had to special order them, I can forgive him. Ha!
