Since January, I have been using the Social Thinking SuperFlex curriculum in the third grade. I learned about the program last year during my internship and saw the benefits the program has on all children. It uses a superhero named, SuperFlex, who helps the citizens of Social Town to defeat a team of "unthinkables" - creatures that try to get kids to overreact, get stuck in their ways, not play fairly, etc.
The kids LOVED this program and to end the year, we let them work together, writing skits about the unthinkables. They then created puppets and presented their skits. The whole project showed how much they had learned during the sessions (both in the skits in they wrote and how well they worked together)!
The skits were written, the stage set, and the marquee all prepared:Scene 1: A little boy defeating Rock Brain, the unthinkable who makes you get stuck on a negative thought or doesn't allow you to think flexibly about a situation.
Scene 2: Defeating Space Invader at a movie theater. Space Invader makes a person unaware of other people's personal space.
Scene 3: Superflex defeating Glassman, who makes people shatter and overreact to "small problems."
Scene 4: Two fancy ladies helping the waiter at their restaurant defeat Topic Twister, an unthinkable that makes a person always change the subject, ignoring what their friends are talking about.
Scene 5: Defeating Destroyer of Fun, an unthinkable who makes playing games with someone not fun, because they are sore losers or sore winners.
Scene 6: Defeating Was Funny Once at the dinner table, this unthinkable makes someone tell a joke again and again, well after it's no longer funny. And here are the "actors"- each puppet shows really matches the personality of the child who created it, amazing how that works out!
This really was SO fun for us and the kids, and I love how the show turned out! The heads of school came to see the shows and the kids were so proud to share what they've learned this year in such creative fashion!
That is too cute!!
