Da plane, da plane!

Over the weekend, I went to Rhode Island with two friends to see the big air show. We got super lucky, the humid and very (very) rainy weather stopped just as we arrived and over the course of the day the weather got better and better.
Before the show began we wondered around the air strip looking at the display planes. It was cool to see the variety of planes the military has.
One of the big attractions was the F-22 Raptor. It's a super fancy plane with stealth capabilities. It flew over with its "belly" facing us and opened the bay doors, where the missiles would go.
The Osprey also did a flight for the crowd. It can take off like a helicopter and then transition to a propellor plane - or vise versa - very very cool. The Blue Angels plane also did a demo - before the big Blue Angel demo (that's a post all by itself!)
There were tons of different planes performing all day. The red Oracle would put itself into a stall, free fall in a variety of crazy ways and then recover. Pretty much - it would be crashing and then prevent the crash at the last minute - insane.
I personally love all the smoke trails. The perfect blue skies were perfect for seeing the variety of trails each plane left.
Of course, then the F-22 showed up all the smoke trails by turning on its afterburners. Point, F-22.
It was really a fun day - and the best was still to come, the Blue Angels - which gets its own post!

This post is full of amazing photography that brings back fond memories of childhood. Growing up in Willow Grove, every year the Willow Grove Naval Air Base had a huge airshow...usually with the Blue Angels. We use to sit in our backyard on the stone wall and watch the airshow above our heads. Sometimes those Blue Angels would fly so low you could make out the pilots. And it was LOUD! :)

How wonderful! You have some terrific captures. I can ditto Kathy's comment too. We watched and heard the annual airshow pretty regularly.
