Archive of Mind

Roll away your stone I will roll away mine
Together we can see what we will find

Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal...

{Roll Away Your Stone -- Mumford and Sons}

The Peabody Essex Museum just wrapped up the most amazing immersive and interactive exhibit. "Archive of Mind" was designed by the artist Kimsooja and asks the viewer to become involved in the piece.

You're given a piece of clay and roll it into a ball. It is meant to be a meditative experience as the clay moves between your palms. Then, once you've finished your sphere, you push it up against the others, creating one piece larger than yourself.

Set in a dark room, the earth tones popped against the black surroundings. A sea of spheres, all created by museum patrons. It truly was a different experience and a beautiful sight.

First I recognized the balls of clay were not stones. Then I saw how many of them there were. And finally I read what the experience was. All those stone balls of clay were made by different people coming into the arrangement together. Thanks.
