Currently, in Madison Square Park, are 49 towering Atlantic white cedar trees. An almost haunting public artwork by Maya Lin called Ghost Forest. Each tree stands about 40ft tall, towering over the park’s big lawn. They almost overwhelm the park and Lin’s vision is that they stand as a metaphor of the huge impact of the environmental issues facing Earth.
A ghost forest is what dead woodland that was once vibrant is called. The Atlantic white cedar populations on the East Coast are currently endangered by logging practices and threats from climate change. The trees in Ghost Forest were all going to be cleared as part of regeneration efforts in the fragile ecosystem of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey — my childhood backyard.
These barren trees, standing in the middle of a lush park and towering city were a stark message of what could happen if we do not act collectively towards the global climate crisis.

What an incredible reminder of what we are doing to the planet...
Wow, what a powerful message from this amazing artistic display, Tamar. I just finished watching a Netflix documentary series called Connected. It is really fascinating and a few episodes talk about climate change. I think you would really enjoy it if you haven't watched it already.

...what a statement.
This is a powerful, haunting installation. Do you know why she picked 49 trees as the number?
Both stunning and chilling!
Wow, that is such an interesting installation.
This is really powerful and impressive!
So sad! In Colorado, we are seeing much pine tree damage brought by climate change.
Wow! What a powerful lesson!
I recognize her name. She designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC.
Powerful messaging and great contrast!
