There's a new train station in the city! Decades after the initial plan was put on hold the LIRR extension at Grand Central Station - Grand Central Madison finally opened! The East Side Extension of Grand Central takes up 5 blocks hundreds of feet below Madison Avenue. Construction initially started in the late 1960’s but was abandoned mid-digging beneath the East River due to financial issues in the 1970’s. Work finally started again in the 90s and despite ongoing funding issues and a little pandemic the project is finally done!
The station is a work of art, too. The whole place is shiny and clean (for now...let's be real). Four of the 22 escalators are the longest and steepest in New York City stretching 182 feet in length and 90 feet in depth. There are tons of mosaic murals and other funky art installations. Some of the glass mosaics are by Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith. They expect over 150,000 passengers a day will come through the station on their way to and from the Island! Tuesday, February 21, 2023

it was a long time renovation. But the result is amazing. The murals are absolutely delightful. I like that places like that shows real piece of art.
