For the love of...

"Education is the point at which we decide if we love the world enough to assume responsibility for it." -- Hannah Arendt

102 days of doing what I love. Teaching.  Everyday I wake up to do what I love. Make a difference. Teach the future. Help children learn and learn to love learning.

Some days are rough. It's human nature. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Not only do I love teaching, but I love my students. I am invested in their future. I see how far they have come since September and want to know how much farther they will do.
Part of the reason I decided to go into elementary and special education was to be able to help children with special learning needs in ways I may not have been helped years years and ago.

There are some moments that really tug at my heart strings and make me remember that I am doing this for the kids.

One of my students goes upstairs to the Learning Center each day to get support in his reading and writing. A few days a week he goes upstairs during reading group time, a few weeks ago he refused to go upstairs and was sobbing in the hallway with his special educator. I went out in the hallway to see if I could help. I managed to get him to tell me it wasn't fair. That it wasn't fair that because he always went upstairs that he never got a chance on the computer during reading time.
It broke my heart. And he was right. He never got to have a turn on the computer during reading time and it wasn't fair.

At that moment I wanted to hug him so tightly and tell him I understood. I really did. Sometimes being the child with the learning issue isn't fair. at. all.

At that moment I loved teaching more than I ever have. And I wasn't actually teaching a lesson. I was helping a child not give up. I connected on a different level with a child - I was able to say - I understand and it isn't fair. I was teaching him that his teacher cared. That his teacher loved him and wanted to help him.
I hope that each of my students knows how much I love them and how much I love teaching them and watching them grow.  They may be crazy somedays, but I look forward to each new day and seeing what adventures the school day holds.

No matter what, I hope I always love teaching, unconditionally.

Mrs. Anna was right, It's a very ancient saying,
But a true and honest thought,
That if you become a teacher,
By your pupils you'll be taught.
