I've been exploring Lower Manhatten lately and it is a gem of an area. A great mix of being along the East River, near the hustle and bustle of the World Trade Center and Oculus, tons of waterfront and other parks, and near tons of new construction it's a great part of the city. On a recent trip, I discovered the Hurricane Maria monument in one of the Battery Park parks along the East River.
It was just unveiled in March and marks the loss the Puerto Rican community felt when the monster storm hit the island in 20217. It is a gorgeous piece. Bright colors, shapes that invoke the feeling of a hurricane's winds, and the words from "Farewell From Welfare Island" inscribed in the glass. A beautiful monument to a special island and what it lost in 2017.

...a colorful statement about one of Trump's many failings. Many Puerto Rican moved to Rochester after the hurricane.
It's very pretty!
It is very lovely! I can't believe it was that long ago. We had a friend there then. It seems more recent than that.
So many colors. I love the beauty!
Wow, so colorful! Thanks for sharing this.
Wow--that is a colorful memorial! The Battery Park area is so interesting --I have old blog posts about so much of that area from when I lived in NYC.
I'm curious if there is also one for Hurricane Sandy?
What a beautiful memorial!
