Dilapidated Dens

{Madonna - Love Don't Live Here Anymore}

Who knew this amazing historical gem was mere miles from my apartment!

Franklin Park Zoo, nestled on the edge of Boston, was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in1912. The zoo was free to all, until 1958, when they fenced in the zoo and began to charge admission.

The zoo abandoned the bear cages outside of the fence and they slowly deteriorated; the dilapidated bear dens are reminders of the old stone and brick zoo.

The bear cages are a weird place. They’re creepy, kind of like all of Franklin Park, but in a thrilling, gorgeous, back-to-the-olden-days kind of way. Even in broad daylight it was a bit spooky, not off the beaten path at all - sounds of joy can easily be herd echoing from the proper zoo a few yards away.

The old structures seem a bit dangerous now, crumbling and covered in rust. They may have been built to keep the animals safely penned up, but these days, they may be the most dangerous things in the park!

... Frederick Law Olmsted designed several of your local parks, they are treasures. I have never been a fan of zoos, caged wild animals just don't seem right to me. The center medallion with the date 1912 and the bears is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Very spooky/neat looking! We have yet to make it to the Franklin park zoo; though it is on our list.

They are very cool looking. I like the standing bears on the stonework a lot.
