I cut it close to the wire, but I finally made it to the MET's 2025 Costume Gallery. This year's theme was so wonderful and the gallery space let the clothes pop! The show is called Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and is a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism.
The exhibit examines the significance of style and its role in shaping Black identities, particularly in the United States and Europe. The clothes on display were amazing! So many sharp styles with rich fabrics, cuts, and accessories. I had heard the term, dandyism, before but seeing the exhibit showcasing it's emergence really broadened my understanding of Black fashion culture!Thursday, October 2, 2025
