We took a day trip to the Negev (the southern region) to Masada last week. Masada is a historic fortress near the Dead Sea and I hadn't been able to visit it when I came to Israel in high school so I am so glad we made it there this trip! Seeing it in person totally lived up to the hype.
Masada was built by King Herod as a fortress/palace, and later, it became the site of one of the most dramatic stories in Jewish history. During the Roman siege around 73 CE, it is said that a group of Jewish rebels made their last stand here. The story of their bravery and ultimate choice not to fall into enemy hands is haunting and powerful. Today, Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and archeological dig site and packed with history.
We took the cable car up to the top. The views are instantly amazing: the Dead Sea in the distance and we could even see over the water to Jordan. Once we got to the top, we wandered through the ruins: Herod’s palace, storerooms, the ancient synagogue, and even a bathhouse. It’s amazing to think about how people lived and thrived in such an isolated spot.
For the way down, we took the Snake Path. It’s this winding, rocky trail with switchbacks all the way to the base of the mountain. It was a serious workout and the views were insane the whole way. Even in November it was pretty warm (it is the desert) and we were glad we opted for cable car up and hiking down!
Masada is one of those places that just stays with you. The combination of jaw-dropping scenery and deep history makes it unforgettable. I am so glad I finally got to experience it!
